THURSDAY - WORKSHOPS

1. QUALITY PRODUCTS (Eng/Fr)
Quality products are seen as a vital strategy for mountain agriculture to survive in the long term.Euromontana has already been working at promoting and developing this issue since 1999. On the basis of a project for a European resources centre and other experiences the workshop will aim at strengthening the strategy for the future.
Chair: Ivar B. Underdal, Mayor of Aurland Kommune (Norway). Rapporteur: Province of Torino (It)
Contributions: Agrocert (Gr), FAER (Ro), University of Krakow (Pl), ISARA-Lyon (Fr), Autonomous Province of Trento (It)

2. FORESTS AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES (Eng/Fr)
Mountain areas are famous for their natural and renewable resources. How is it possible to
create synergies between their maintenance and the economic activities in mountain areas?
This workshop will investigate a major dimension of sustainable development. Its results will
also be a contribution to the main 'Forestry Workshop' on Saturday 18 May.
Chair: Izet Cengic, Faculty of Forestry, University of Sarajevo (Bosnia H.). Rapporteur: Agency for Environment
Midi-Pyrénées (Fr). Contributions: IKT (Sp), SNH (UK), OEFM, Forestry Commission (UK)

3. CULTURAL IDENTITY (Eng/Fr)
In the face of globalisation and standardisation, European mountain areas represent some of the last reservoirs of diversity. Cultural identities should more than ever be maintained and
recognised as the basis of this diversity. What development can be compatible with their
maintenance? The workshop should make some recommendations for the future.
Chair: Prof. Radu Rey, Director of the National Agency for Mountain Areas - Ministry of Agriculture (Romania)
Rapporteur: Dr Stuart Black, Director of Strengthening Communities, HIE (UK)
Contributions: Dr Valentina Zingari, Ethnologist-(Fr / It), Prof. Roberto Confalonieri, CNEL.(It), Unesco (to be confirmed).

4. SOCIAL CAPITAL - LOCAL DYNAMICS / INTRA-REGIONAL CO-OPERATIONS (Eng/Fr)
This aspect of sustainable development may be the 'key' one linking all the others. The effects of local dynamics on the success or failure of rural development projects needs to be investigated in the context of mountain areas. Both through practical experiences and theoretical models the workshop will aim at highlighting the development of 'social capital'.
Chair: Dr Philippe Fleury, Researcher in the Service for Mountain Agriculture SUACI - Northern Alps (France).
Rapporteur: Germano Mattei, SAB (Switzerland).
Contributions: Prof. Mark Shucksmith, University of Aberdeen (UK), The Carpathian Foundation.

5. POSITIVE EXTERNALITIES OF MOUNTAIN FARMING (All languages)
The externalities of mountain farming embrace the social, environmental or territorial impacts of agricultural activities. On the basis of the explanations provided both by Mario Pezzini and Bob Crabtree, the workshop will focus on the ways to better quantify and support the positive
externalities of mountain farming.
Chair: Pierre Praz, SRVA (Switzerland). Rapporteur: Pat Snowdon, SNH (UK).
