Mountainous August: An Initiative for the Development of Mountainous Areas. Mountainous August hosts an annual conference held in Megalohari Artas in Greece. The aim of Mountainous August is to contribute in efforts to raise the quality of life and improve living conditions for the inhabitants of mountainous regions of the European Union, including: The promoting and defending of political, economic and social interests of the inhabitants of mountainous regions, both to governments of the member-states, and to all organizations who interact with the citizens of mountainous areas. The support of research which involves mountainous zones at the local, regional, national or European levels. (Agriculture, stock-breeding, forestry and the preservation of the environment are of particular importance). The informing of public awareness about the problems affecting mountainous regions and the publication of support material. The encouragement of education and study focusing on mountainous zones, including research of the economic, social and environmental problems in these areas and their effects on inhabitants. The promotion of co-operations at national and European levels to reduce inequalities between mountainous regions, with a target of economic and social cohesion. To achieve its aims, Mountainous August co-operates harmoniously with other national and European organizations.
